Deep Tissue "Muscle Energy Technique - MET"
Gary Gilbert, RN, NCTMB, Certified Advanced Rolfer® and Rolf Movement Practitioner
Deep Tissue Muscle Energy Technique (MET)
Prerequisite: CMT or RN
12 Certified Education hours

MET is an active muscular relaxation technique.  MET can be used successfully, easily and quickly to release tight muscles when nothing else will.  By involving the client in the process, it uses the client’s own central nervous system (CNS) to release muscles that are resistant to release by other techniques or modalities.  Its origins are found in Osteopathic and Physiotherapy techniques.  MET is one of the primary muscle release techniques used in Orthopedic Massage.  It uses the principles of post isometric relaxation (PIR) and reciprocal inhibition (RI) in a simple combination of easily applied techniques.  Students have reported that their work has become easier and more effective since they took the MET class.

A sound knowledge of muscles, their origins and insertions is strongly recommended.  The Trail Guide to the Body by Andrew Biel is an excellent resource.  The other resource for the class is Muscle Energy Techniques by Leon Chaitow, ND, DO.

Clothing for the class will be sports apparel, preferably soft cotton.  Cut-off sweats or running shorts for everyone and sports bras for females.  Students will practice the techniques in these clothes.
