Over 25 years into the pandemic, the rate of new HIV infections remains unacceptably high in the United States and throughout the world. The U.S. has been stuck at a rate of 40,000 new infections annually for over a decade.

On September 21, 2006, the US Centers for Disease Control issued new recommendations regarding HIV testing.  The recommendations are that all adults, adolescents, and pregnant women aged 13 to 64 make HIV testing a routine part of medical care. These recommendations seek to address the 25 percent of Americans the CDC estimates are HIV-positive and do not know it. The current testing has failed to identify the 250,000 Americans who need to be in care for HIV infection from getting care.

Although we still have no cure for HIV infection, advances in therapeutic drugs created by Western medicine give people hope, health, and longevity. In spite of this success, many drug treatments produce a range of severe side effects and people look to Complementary and Alternative Medical Techniques to help cope with these challenges.  As massage therapists, we are faced with the challenge of helping our clients deal with the effects of their changing lives.  This class hopes to fill the critical gaps in our understanding of this disease so we may better serve the clients in our care.
